The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, this morning presented the Ministryโs bi-weekly briefing on national, regional, and global issues to local and Addis Ababa-based international correspondents.
On the occasion, Ambassador Nebiat emphasized the Ministry’s efforts in political, economic, and citizen-centered diplomacy.
Political Diplomacy
Ambassador Nebiat highlighted Ethiopia’s growing role as a stabilizing force and an influential nation in the region. In such score, he underscored Ethiopia’s consistent contributions to regional and global peace and stability. Key developments in this area include visits to Ethiopia by several high-ranking foreign dignitaries and the increasing number of countries seeking to establish embassies in Addis Ababa. Currently, the city hosts 137 foreign embassies, solidifying its position as a prominent hub for regional and international diplomatic activities.
Economic Diplomacy
On economic diplomacy, Ambassador Nebiat noted that Ethiopia has made significant progress over the past week. He attributed this to recent macroeconomic reforms that have enhanced the governmentโs capacity to foster cooperation in critical sectors and attract foreign direct investment. He also mentioned successful engagements with the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and representatives from nearly 20 firms based in China, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel, which have contributed to advancing tangible partnerships.
Citizen-Centered Diplomacy
Ambassador Nebiat emphasized the governmentโs unwavering focus on citizen-centered diplomacy to better serve and protect Ethiopian nationals abroad. He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with key stakeholders, to voluntarily repatriate nationals facing severe conditions in Myanmar due to human trafficking. He also warned the public against falling victim to online fraudsters offering deceptive promises of opportunities overseas. Additionally, he announced collaborative efforts with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to repatriate approximately 2,000 Ethiopians in distressing circumstances in Lebanon as swiftly as possible.
At the conclusion of the briefing, Ambassador Nebiat responded to questions from attending journalists.
